Developing a product line from scratch might sound like a fun or even flippant venture, but there are a lot of important decisions to be made. A core part of the Meaningful Mantra purpose is to create products with intention.
This is why we say our products are intentionally crafted, and that Ingredients Matter. One of the most important decisions to be made when launching a candle line is the choice of wax. While there are lots of seemingly green and eco-friendly options available, we believe that one type of wax stands out as a clear frontrunner.
All of our candles are made with coconut wax that is produced daily. There are a number of reasons that we have chosen coconut wax over other traditionally “non-toxic” waxes such as soy wax or even beeswax. By the end of this guide, we hope you’ll be as smitten with coconut wax as we are.
Cleaner burn
When you burn candles in your home, you are potentially introducing hundreds of chemical components into the air. These can settle on your skin and in your lungs, causing allergic reactions and reducing air quality in your home. Coconut candles produce minimal soot and provide a longer, more even burn.
This means that coconut wax candles are perfect for those with asthma, allergies and sensitivities to air pollutants. Alternatives like soy and paraffin wax will produce more soot and smoke, which can impact the air quality.
Sustainable and eco-friendly
Another reason we love coconut wax is that coconuts are a high-yield crop, which means that they produce more per acre than products like soy or beeswax. We also don’t have to harvest the whole crop, which reduces the environmental impact. The trees keep growing, trapping CO2 from the atmosphere, and we just have to harvest their crop.
The production of soy is linked to deforestation as it requires large areas of land for growing. As demand for soy products grows, this is driving deforestation in the Amazon as the area is cleared to make space for soy production. Paraffin is a byproduct of the petrochemical industry, which we all know is a leading cause of climate change.

Excellent scent throw
So far, we’re looked at the safety and environmental factors, but these aren’t the only reasons that coconut is a superior choice for aromatherapy candles. Coconut wax blends well with essential oils, ensuring a stronger and more natural scent throw.
This means that you’ll enjoy more scent from your candles, and subtle scents will be more likely to be picked up in the mix. The coconut wax also lends itself to the scent, producing a luxuriously indulgent scent that will leave you feeling like you’re enjoying a high end spa.
Our bestselling candle Coconut Water is an excellent choice to make the most of the coconut wax base. This candle is reminiscent of a walk on the beach in summertime, with notes of juniper, coconut, vanilla and bergamot.
Minimal allergen risk
Soy and beeswax are common allergens, but coconut wax is less likely to cause a reaction. Soy is often responsible for allergies due to its GMO status. The majority of soy crops are genetically modified to make them more resilient, which can increase the risk of allergies. While some might be organic certified, this doesn’t eliminate the risk of irritation.
Our Summer Non-Toxic Gift Set is the perfect place to start for customers looking for 100% natural candles that will elevate your home without introducing allergens. This set includes seasonal favourites including Sicilian Lemon, California Coast and Honeysuckle Wildflowers.
Biodegradable and safe
If you’ve ever tipped over a paraffin candle when the wax is molten, you’ll know just how damaging this can be in your home. Thankfully, coconut wax is much safer when it spills and is so much easier to clear up.
Coconut wax spills can be easily cleaned up using a mild soap and warm water – you won’t be left scraping paraffin residue off your table tops, walls or carpet.
Coconut wax also has a much lower melting point, which means it won’t be as hot when the candle burns. This can give peace of mind to parents and pet owners, as your loved ones are much less likely to be harmed by a candle. Of course, you should still exercise an abundance of caution when burning candles in your home and make sure you keep them out of reach of children and pets.
